Not a "Racist"

I have a few thoughts regarding racism in general. Okay…this is a tough subject, but I am going to jump in anyway and give it a shot.

I am not one for labels of any sort i.e. - middle aged, Baptist, yuppie, hippy, liberal, and so on and so forth. For some reason our society has developed an idiotic propensity for casting the whole of the world into labelized standards and generalities. This does not set well with me.

First, everyone, no matter who they are, no matter where they are from, no matter what color their skin has an incredible amount of potential within them. The potential to create, to learn, to teach, to grow, to do anything they dream of doing.

Were I to allow people the luxury of slapping a label on me then I would be a nearly middle-aged, single mother, atheist, with only a high school education, a dead-end job, and not much to look forward to in my future. Well, I say forget that! I am more than the sum of my social labels. I am fun, creative, loving, learning, growing, and dreaming of a brighter future with every step I take.

All of that being said, I would like to post something that most people would be too intimidated to post for fear of being misunderstood. (This is a bulletin that my daughter received on her My Space account earlier today. My commentary on it will follow directly.)

You call me, “redneck”,”hillbilly”, “slaker”, “Cracker”, “Honkey”, “Whitey”, “Gringo” and you think it’s OK.

…But when I call you coon, jiggaboo, Kike, sand nigger, rag head ,Towelhead, WOP, Camel Jockey, Gook, slant eyes or Chink you call me a racist.

-You say that “whites” commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

-You have the United Negro College Fund.

-You have Martin Luther King Day.

-You have Black History Month.

-You have Cesar Chavez Day.

-You have Yom Hashoah

-You have Ma’uled Al-Nabi

-You have the NAACP.

-You have BET.

-If we had WET(white entertainment television) …we’d be racist.

-If we had a White Pride Day… you would call us racist.

-If we had white history month… we’d be racist.

-If we had an organization for only whites to “advance” our lives… we’d be racist.

-If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships…you know we’d be racist.

-In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights…you would call us racist.

-Did you know that some high school students decided to make a club for only the white students because the other ethnicities had them… they all got sent to court for being racist but the African American, Latino, and Asia clubs were not even questioned.

-You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you’re not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

I am white.

I am proud.
But, you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

Now watch, I’ll be a racist for posting this

Alright, so it’s pretty clear to me what this person is trying to say. It’s blatant and in your face, but let’s stop for one second and think about some of these things. I will never ever try to down play any amount of persecution suffered by any race of man based solely on the color of their skin. It is an atrocity more debasing IMHO than any other. I’d also like to add that no matter what the color of your skin you should be proud of who and what you are. Not a single race of human being on the face of the planet can boast the claim of a lily white cultural or societal history.

To my own shame I have (in the past) used the “N” word in an extremely hostile moment just following one of three consecutive burglaries of my home. While some of you might think that makes it okay for me to do such a thing, you would be dead wrong. It was an irrational statement made by me and will ever be a dark moment in my memory.

Just the same, I have two children ages 13 and 16 that currently attend public schools. Until my children started attending public school I am quite sure they had never heard the “N” word uttered from anyone in my home. Despite that fact my children walked into their respective schools and were bombarded with a seemingly endless display of racial bias. Both of them have reported being called all sorts of racially hateful names based on their skin color, and to date only my son lost possession of his reason long enough to utter a hateful term in return. He was not excused for his reaction to the situation by either the school or me.

So here comes this bulletin as seen above. I am forced to contemplate some of the things that are said here. I am not offended when anyone of any race feels the desire to be proud of or celebrate their heritage based on the color of their skin. Why is the converse not true? Don’t mistake me here! I feel no need to organize a march or establish a special group based on the color of my skin. But, what if someone else does?

In case anyone hasn’t noticed the population is slowly but surely becoming less of a white majority. Does this bother me? Not at all. What bothers me, is that my son can be subjected to punishment for uttering hateful racial terms while the other child is not so much as reprimanded for the exact same thing. Excuse me, is that a logical or reasonable message for either of the children involved? I certainly don’t think so.

While I will not be running around wearing my “I’m white and proud of it!” shirt, I am still proud of who and what I am. I am a good friend, mother, lover, gamer, and human being in general. I do not equate the word good with perfect so don’t go thinking this is some vulgar display of my elitism either. There is no such bone in my body. We are all equal and should be treated as such by one another in all things.

There Really Is Hope

As so many people do, I often haunt the YouTube web-site. I am always looking for unique and meaningful content. Today I found the clip below and as I watched this production I can honestly say, I wept shameless tears of pure unmitigated joy. I haven’t felt so hopeful in a very long time.

In today’s times there seems to be so much hate driven energy, I wonder if our humanity is headed in the right direction at all. Thank you to every single one of the contributors that took part in creating this stunningly hopeful piece. It is a beacon in the darkness that threatens our lives.

Googling for answers

Ah, Google…what can be said about it other than, it is a magnificent doorway leading to the continually growing expanse of knowledge on the Internet. While not every site out there is worth your time, there are more than enough credible ones to feed the most voracious of minds.

What I remember most about my youth and the resources that were available with regards to learning, or being more informed on any topic, is that there never seemed to be enough of them. I had a library card in every municipality in my general vicinity. We even owned one of the best sets of encyclopedias to be had. Yet, somehow these all seemed to leave you wanting more.

So, today I had a question rolling around in my mind. “Does God exist?” A curious question to be sure since I don’t personally believe it’s very likely. Still, I decided to drop the question into my Google search bar. (Gotta love technology.) In approximately 0.17 seconds Google returned a whopping 6,650,000 hits on my question and various words contained therein.

Most of the time I stick to the first two or three pages of hits since they seem to get further and further off the mark as you move through them. Notably, the first two hits where Pro-God with the third being the Atheist Foundation of Australia. I do try not to dismiss what theists have to say, though it becomes very difficult when faced with so many completely unreasonable and totally unprovable assertions with regards to the question of God’s existence.

Needless to say I only got through perhaps 3/4 of the first pages on each of the Theistic based sites before moving onward. I started going through the Australian Atheist Foundation site and was so delighted to find a section entitled “Quotes” on the side navigation bar of their home page.

The quotes sited on this page were inspirational to say the least. Knowing that my beliefs place me in the company of so many great minds is very gratifying. I have to say my favorite was a quote cited by Percy Bysshe Shelley, “If God has spoken, why is the world not convinced?” Simple, eloquent, and quite to the point.

Despite my long hours of research into the subject I find my question is still unanswered. “Does God exist?” I have yet to see any facts that quantify such an entity. So my stand on the subject remains as before.

Believe in yourself, let your dreams inspire you, love completely and without reservation, and be ever aware of the difference between fantasy and reality.

Pop culture

Yep! At least it was in my youth. Right along with Dungeons and Dragons, Atari, Nintendo, I Dream of Jeannie, MTv, Gilligan’s Island Cheech and Chong, and Star Trek re-runs. If you haven’t seen this you are missing a very fun piece of pop culture.

Animusic

What a wonderful discovery! I spend as much of my spare time as possible in the virtual world of Second Life. It is one of my dreams to become skilled enough to render at least one awe inspiring masterpiece before I exit stage left.

The following are clips I located on YouTube directly following my first viewing of Animusic. These are absolutely enthralling. I was scarcely able to tear my eyes away from the screen.

What lured me so deeply into this amazing work of art was the sheer magic of the precision with which these creators have wed music to computer graphics.

Good reasons to vote...

Here is a tough subject I was involved in earlier today.

While cruising through my favorite bloggers’ recent posts I came across “Schizo YouTube” posted on Friday, March 30th, on Brian Flemming’s Weblog. I followed the links provided and found myself very interested to know more information. The “Vote Different” ad mash was highly symbolic in its presentation, however the only concept I seemed aware of was a definite aversion to Hillary Clinton. This left me asking, who is this creator affiliated with, and which candidate does this individual support and why?

After watching this YouTube video I entered the web-address BarackObama.com provided at the closing of the video presentation, into my newly opened blank tab window and found something that really was rather disturbing. I started poking through some of the information on the site. All in all it might seem as though this “Grassroots”,community organizer, is a swell sort of candidate with the well being of the entire nation as his top priority. Then I checked the links on the drop down menu listed under “Learn” titled “Meet Barack”. This is when it hit me right in the gut.

At first the video on this page seems average enough in the way its trying to accomplish its designated task, and even the mention of being active in his church didn’t really spark much aversion. However, as the video plays on there are a number of clips showing Mr. Obama speaking publicly. I have to admit, he is an exceptionally powerful speaker. Well, spoken, educated, and extremely reminiscent of every single evangelical preacher I’ve ever heard give a sermon. It was in these moments that my gut rolled in terror at the thought of someone of this ilk making it into the White House. It was at this point I found myself wishing with every fiber of my being that at least one worthy Secular candidate were out there.

Later, I was discussing this candidate with a close friend and flatly stated that I frankly didn’t really wish to vote for any candidate at this time. Yes, I am a registered voter, but I often find I am not willing to cast my vote on which ever is the lesser of the available evils. This comment received the ever popular response, “If you don’t vote, then you have no right to complain about the state of affairs in this country.” Well, I say stuff that where the sun doesn’t often shine.

I am a hard working American citizen, law abiding, tax paying, and community supportive. I have every single right that any other Red-Blooded American has to either accept or not accept the state of political affairs in this country. Whether I vote or not has no bearing.

Following this statement there was a long silence. Enough time to process the next rebuttal I presume. Then comes the argument, “Well, it is your only feed-back into the system.” Ah, me thinks not, my good fellow. I explained that there were plenty of other feed-backs into the system that are quite frankly listened to more earnestly than any anonymous vote I might cast into the electoral sea. What about letters to elected officials, or petitions, or lobbying in the State Senate? What about the vast viral network of the blogosphere, or YouTube? Give me a break! The “only” feed-back mechanism my ass.

I even took the time to ask my nearly voting aged daughter, an exceptionally bright person that will one day be one of this nation’s voting eligible populous. Her opinion was this, “I will vote when there is someone I feel is worthy of my vote. Though, in all honesty, the electoral system is highly corrupt and the popular vote actually holds very little sway in the actual election process.” Suddenly, I felt completely vindicated. I have never even discussed the election process with either of my children, so I felt her answer was honest and unbiased with regards to my own point of view.

So here is the question I put to any and all who would care to answer. Can you give us a “good” reason to vote? We are open to everyone’s responses, but I will state that if you feel some need to post a hateful or derogatory comment I will not even consider posting it or responding to it. I understand and welcome any differing point of view as long as we can keep this on an adult and non-aggressive level.
